Residency Fellowships and Conference Scholarships

To apply for a summer residency fellowship see the instructions below.  To apply for a scholarship to attend a conference, please follow the instructions on the Events page of mises.org for that conference.

Summer residency fellowships, named in memory of Peg Rowley, are available to graduate or law students, ABDs and post-docs interested in scientific research in the Austrian School and classical liberalism. O.P. Alford, III residency fellowships are available to exceptional undergraduates who have attended Mises University or other Mises Institute programs. These summer fellowships offer a unique opportunity for students to research and write in a particular area of specialization.

The fellowship program is intended primarily for those enrolled in a graduate program or law school or have an acceptance in hand from a graduate school or law school.

These are not internships in the regular sense. The Mises Institute permits and expects its Fellows to pursue serious intellectual work under the direct guidance of faculty in residence, including academic vice president Joseph Salerno. You will develop an expertise in a field that would not be cultivated in a classroom setting, deeply read literature otherwise unavailable, and take advantage of a window of opportunity for serious investigation and reflection. During the typical academic career, such opportunities are extremely rare.

You will also benefit from becoming part of a community of scholars, and enrich that community through your own contributions. The campus  includes a  vast library  based on the private collection of Murray Rothbard among other important scholars and donor institutions, archives of the papers of great Austrian economists and libertarian thinkers, the most advanced technology, JStor access, offices for students and faculty, and many other resources.

For anyone working in the fields of Austrian economics and libertarian political theory, this combination of intellectual stimulation and social opportunity create the perfect environment for productive academic work. Many former Fellows (such as Robert Murphy, Tom Woods, and Gabriel Calzada) have become professors and writers and have otherwise ended up having a huge influence in the world of ideas.

F.A. Hayek and Ludwig von MisesSummer Fellowships include housing for non-Auburn residents, an office, library access, admission to Mises summer conferences, shuttle between Atlanta airport and Auburn, and stipend.  Residency runs from late May until early August.

For Summer Residency Fellowship application go to the Fellowship Application page of Mises Academy.   You will need to take 1-2 minutes to create a free Mises Academy username if you do not already have one.  Once on the application page, you can complete the application form and submit the required documents using the simple upload feature.  Students who are unable to obtain digital versions of the required documents may submit them via fax to 734-448-8148 or via ground mail to Mises Summer Fellowships, 518 West Magnolia Avenue, Auburn, AL 36832.   Or materials can be scanned to [email protected]   All applicants will be notified of the status of their completed applications after a faculty review.

Required documents before an application can be considered:  completed application; informal transcript; copy of student ID; two academic letters of recommendation; an academic writing sample; and a detailed proposal of the research you wish to conduct during the summer if a fellowship is granted.

GUIDELINES

Writing Sample:  A sample of your academic writing, either a paper written for a class or a BA or MA thesis, or articles published on Mises.org or LRC.  Any length. You are not expected to write something original specifically for this application.

Research Proposal:  The research proposal should include an explanation of the topic; sources to date (articles, books); the methodology (deductive, historical, empirical); the data (if applicable) of the study you plan to use; and a statement about the rationale of the research: what is the problem or issue that you are addressing, why it is important, why past attempts to solve it have been inadequate or nonexistent, and how your research will contribute to its solution.

Letters of Recommendation:  These two letters should address your academic strengths that go beyond what is recorded in his or her transcript.  Particularly helpful are comments on your interest in Austrian economics or Austrian scholarship in general.  Additionally, if you are an undergraduate, these letters should address your commitment to and capacity for pursuing a graduate degree.  If you are a graduate student, the letters should address the quality of your  research and potential to make contributions in your academic field.   If your professors wish to send these letters privately, they can be emailed to [email protected] or faxed to 734-448-8148.

If you have difficulty uploading your application materials to Mises Academy, please email them to [email protected]

Deadline for application is February 20, 2012.  Applications received after February 20 will be considered, as space permits.
