BOOKS:

Die Entwicklung des gutsherrlic-bäuerlichen Verhältnisses in Galizien: 1772-1848. [The Development of the Relationship between Peasant and Lord of the Manor in Galicia: 1772-1848]. According to Mises, (Notes and Recollections, p.6) this study about the disappearance of serfdom in Mises' native Galicia was the result of an assignment by his college professor. Galicia, now part of Poland and Ukraine, had been the site of a bloody peasant uprising against the nobility in 1846. Mises was not proud of this work because it was "more a history of government measures than economic history." (Series: Wiener Staatswissenschaftliche Studien. 4:2). No English translation available. Mises comments here on some of the most well-known of these attempts. He is especially concerned to disprove theories which hold the state responsible for the creation of money. 1919

BOOKS:

Nation, State, and Economy: Contributions to the Politics and History of Our Time. A discussion of the respective influences of the nation (the ideological/cultural unit), the state (The political/legal institution) and the economy (the product of market relationships). An analysis of the statist trends in Austria and Germany that were the ultimate causes of their economic and military ruin in World War I. This work is quite similar to Mises's later work, The Free and Prosperous Commonwealth [Liberalism]. Like that work, it develops a theory of nationalism based on the struggle of various interest groups for access to control of the state, enabling the winning group to secure privileges at the expense of others. This work is however more oriented toward contemporary events. Mises comments at length on the nationalities problem of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and on the Treaties of Versailles and Saint-Germain following World War I. Mises's radical opposition to immigration boundaries and his defense of the rights of national minorities are noteworthy. Only a laissez-faire regime can solve the nationalities problem.
