Dad’s $10 Shoes?

Dad’s $10 Shoes?

In Dr. Seuss’s book ”The Cat in the Hat Comes Back” (1958) there is an expression of alarm that the walls are being cleaned with “Dad’s $10 shoes,” which in today’s terms would be about $62. I find it odd that the kid in the book is so freaked out by about the price of his dad’s shoes when they are clearly not especially expensive for shoes. He doesn’t specify the price of any other items potentially runed by the Cat ring, e.g. Mom’s dress, Dad’s bed, the wall, the hallway rung. Though I suppose any child would likely become agitated and irrational with a huge erect cat running about the house transferring a pink spot from one thing to the next.

What is the Mises Institute?

The Mises Institute is a non-profit organization that exists to promote teaching and research in the Austrian School of economics, individual freedom, honest history, and international peace, in the tradition of Ludwig von Mises and Murray N. Rothbard.

Non-political, non-partisan, and non-PC, we advocate a radical shift in the intellectual climate, away from statism and toward a private property order. We believe that our foundational ideas are of permanent value, and oppose all efforts at compromise, sellout, and amalgamation of these ideas with fashionable political, cultural, and social doctrines inimical to their spirit.
